FACT: Plants Improve People, Economy, & Environment

The Benefits Of Plants Are Clear And Well-Defined

FACT: The better the landscape, the better a house sells.  Every person who comes to look at a house comments on the landscape.  Every dollar invested in landscaping generates a $1.09 return.  That compares to kitchen remodeling, which used to be 93 cents and went to 70 cents on the dollar.  Landscaping is the only service that generates more than a dollar per dollar invested.

FACT: Studies have proven that there is a link between flowers and plants and a person’s wellbeing.  They can increase happiness and physical health. Patients who had plants in their hospital rooms during their stay were less likely to return to the hospital.  Plus, patients experience accelerated healing not only when exposed to flowers and potted plants in their rooms, but also when they have views of beautifully landscaped areas around the hospital.  They also had less stress and less pain meds than when they were exposed to essential oils.

FACT: A landscape of about 2,000 square feet in size consisting of grass/turf, trees, and shrubs outside can generate enough oxygen for one person for a year.

FACT: Plants reduce air pollutants and can decrease sick time.  That’s probably because plants function as atmospheric filters, and in fact plant-filled rooms contain 50-60% fewer airborne molds and bacteria than rooms without plants.

FACTThere is a high correlation between nice landscaping and high occupancy rates of buildings.  People enjoy aesthetically-pleasing areas and are much more likely to choose to live and work in buildings with attractive landscapes.  The return in the number of tenants and rents received far exceeds the cost of installing ornamental plants, therefore it is just wise and profitable to invest money in landscaping.

FACT:  Active participation in gardening and landscaping activities is not only a good form of exercise, but also an effective way to reduce stress levels.  Studies have shown that people who nurture plants and garden have less mental distress than others.

FACT: Studies verified a bacterium found in soil that stimulates serotonin production, mirroring the effect on neurons that drugs like Prozac provide.  The natural effects of the soil bacteria antidepressant can be felt for up to 3 weeks.

FACT: Statistically, the more plants a city has, the lower the crime rates, because when residents feel greater pride in the beauty of where they live, then they are much less likely to detract from it.

FACT: Window views of nature in prisons are associated with lower frequencies of prisoner stress symptoms (headache, upset stomach, etc.), and therefore lower use of health care facilities in comparison to views of walls, buildings or other prisoners.

FACT: Shade trees reduce cooling costs during the summer, and appropriately situated trees and shrubs can also serve as windbreaks, saving money on winter’s heating bills.
